The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation expresses its deep concern about the dramatic worsening of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people, expresses solidarity with the populations who are victims of violence and destruction and calls for immediate and effective initiatives in favour of peace, in compliance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations that advocate the materialisation of the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people.

The CPPC recalls that it is not possible to view the current events without taking into account decades of brutal occupation, expansion of settlements, siege, repression, violence, murders, arbitrary arrests, discrimination, imposition of deprivations, permanent humiliation of the Palestinian people, with Israel’s blatant and unpunished disregard for international law.

A reality that has exacerbated with the escalation of violence and provocation against Palestinians, including Israeli Arab citizens, by the Benjamin Netanyahu government – which harbours xenophobic and warmongering far-right forces – and by Israeli settlers.

A policy of occupation and oppression that counts on the connivance of the USA and its allies, especially the European Union (EU), which, turning a blind eye to years of criminal acts by Israel, did not seek to implement the paths to peace, namely through compliance with numerous UN resolutions that strive for the rights of the Palestinian people.

The current escalation proves that the denial of the Palestinian people’s national rights is an obstacle to peace and stability in the Middle East, and holds the danger of a war of even greater dimension.

It is demanded that the Portuguese government act in a manner consistent with the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic – which advocates the abolition of colonialism and all forms of aggression, domination and exploitation over people –, striving for an end to the policy of occupation and oppression by Israel and the fulfilment of the national rights of the Palestinian people enshrined in numerous United Nations resolutions.

At a time when distortion and hypocrisy prevail, the CPPC expresses its solidarity with the populations that are victims of violence and destruction, with the Palestinian people who are victims of decades of brutal occupation and oppression, and with those in Israel, Jews and Arabs, who challenge the policy of occupation and oppression and have defended the cause of peace and respect for the rights of all peoples in the Middle East, particularly of the Palestinian people.

The CPPC reiterates the demand for the creation of the State of Palestine, on the borders prior to June 4, 1967, and with its capital in East Jerusalem, and for the right of return of Palestinian refugees to be respected, in compliance with the UN resolutions that advocate them.

The CPPC invites democrats and peace defenders to participate in the public event “For peace in the Middle East,” which will take place next Wednesday, October 11, at 6pm, at Praça Martim-Moniz, in Lisbon.

Pela paz no Médio Oriente!

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação expressa a sua profunda preocupação com o dramático agravamento do conflito entre Israel e o povo palestino, manifesta a solidariedade com as populações vítimas da violência e destruição e reclama iniciativas imediatas e efetivas a favor da paz, no cumprimento das resoluções aplicáveis da Organização das Nações Unidas que pugnam pela concretização dos legítimos direitos nacionais do povo palestino.
O CPPC recorda que não é possível olhar os presentes acontecimentos sem ter em conta décadas de brutal ocupação, de ampliação dos colonatos, de cerco, de repressão, de violência, de assassinatos, de prisões arbitrárias, de discriminações, de imposição de privações, de permanente humilhação do povo palestino, de frontal e impune desrespeito do direito internacional por parte de Israel.

Uma realidade que se agravou com a escalada de violência e provocação contra os palestinos, incluindo os cidadãos árabes israelitas, por parte do governo de Benjamin Netanyahu – que integra forças de extrema-direita xenófobas e belicistas – e de colonos israelitas.

Uma política de ocupação e opressão que conta a conivência dos EUA e seus aliados, em especial a União Europeia (UE), que, fechando os olhos a anos de atos criminosos por parte de Israel, não procuraram efetivar os caminhos para a paz, nomeadamente através do cumprimentos das inúmeras resolução da ONU que pugnam pelos direitos do povo palestino.

A actual escalada comprova que a negação dos direitos nacionais do povo palestino é um obstáculo à paz e à estabilidade no Médio Oriente, assim como encerra o perigo de uma guerra de ainda maiores proporções.
Ao Governo português exige-se que atue de forma coerente com os princípios da Carta das Nações Unidas e da Constituição da República Portuguesa – que preconiza a abolição do colonialismo e de quaisquer outras formas de agressão, domínio e exploração sobre os povos –, pugnando pelo fim da política de ocupação e opressão por parte de Israel e pelo cumprimento dos direitos nacionais do povo palestino.

Num tempo em que campeiam a deturpação e a hipocrisia, o CPPC expressa a sua solidariedade às populações vítimas da violência e destruição, ao povo palestino vítima de décadas de brutal ocupação e opressão, e àqueles que em Israel, judeus e árabes, confrontam a política de ocupação e opressão e têm defendido a causa da paz e o respeito pelos direitos de todos os povos do Médio Oriente, nomeadamente do povo palestino.

O CPPC reitera a exigência da criação do Estado da Palestina, nas fronteiras anteriores a 4 de junho de 1967 e com capital em Jerusalém Oriental, e do respeito do direito ao regresso dos refugiados palestinos, no cumprimento das resoluções da ONU que os consagram.

O CPPC convida os democratas e defensores da paz a participarem no ato público “Pela Paz no Médio Oriente, e pelos direitos do Povo Palestiniano!”, que terá lugar na próxima Quarta-feira, dia 11 de Outubro, ás 18h00, na Praça Martim-Moniz, em Lisboa.
