Sept. 12, 1974: Beginning of the socialist revolution in Ethiopia.
Today marks the anniversary of the radical military uprising that overthrew the Ethiopian monarchy and began this African nation on the path to socialism under the leadership of the Derg, the Workersâ Party of Ethiopia and Comrade Mengistu Haile Mariam.
Tragically, the revolution was overthrown in 1991 after decades of intense pressure by U.S. imperialism in the region, famine and of course the counter-revolutionary developments in the USSR and European socialist camp.
