Today, if the people’s movement forces the racist capitalist state

to punish one of its own agents – whether an official one like Derek Chauvin or an unofficial one like Kyle Rittenhouse – that is a victory,  and a necessary step toward the ultimate goal of getting rid of the capitalist state, and eventually all forms of the state.

Abolition of prisons and police is a noble goal. It’s part of what we are ultimately fighting for.  But that’s dependent on the abolition of class society,  which can only come about through socialist revolution and the development of communism.

It would be better, of course,  if the workers and oppressed had their own institutions to punish their class enemies.  But we’re not there yet. Demands like “Jail killer cops,” “Community control of the police,” and “Disarm police and fascists” are examples of “survival pending revolution,” as the Black Panthers used to say about their community health and defense programs.

We want to get our class siblings out of racist jails and fight for new forms of justice within our communities. “Tearing down the walls” for workers and oppressed has always been a cornerstone of revolutionary movements. But our violent class enemies still need to be punished and controlled.

The class struggle cannot be wished away by the anarcho-liberal ideology that dominates abolitionist discourse in the movement today. The deep and fatal flaws of this ideology become more apparent with every genuine struggle for justice against the capitalist state and its white supremacist agents.
